Description: Hard and technical ride through the Clauchland Hills. The route takes in Forestry Roads, tracks and rough trails.

Difficulty: Hard (this is a tough ride for experienced mountain bikers only).

This bike ride starts from the Brodick Ferry Terminal where there a many parking options either within the terminal or along the sea front in Brodick.

Route Map

Route Description

1. From Brodick Ferry Terminal, proceed southbound on the A841 by taking a left turn at the top of the hill.

2. Make a quick turn to the left into a singletrack ascent to Corriegills, the asphalt will ultimately give way to a rocky track on a sharp left-hand curve. Turn right at track marked for Dun Fionn, just before the final house on the road.

3. Keep going up this extremely challenging and steep ascent until you reach a route intersection just as the terrain starts to level out. From here, you will get views that extend over Lamlash Bay to Holy Isle.

4. Take the marked turn to the right towards Clauchlands Hill, and then continue rising the singletrack. The natural singletrack then rolls up and down, sometimes very steeply, across Clauchlands Hill, which affords spectacular panoramas to both the north and the south.

5. The highest point of the ridge is denoted by a stone Cairn and from this point on, the terrain changes to a tricky, downhill singletrack that eventually meets the forest road.

6. Take the woodland road to the left until you reach the end of it at the singletrack immediately before number 4.

7. Travel back down the path to number 4, go through the gate continuing straight on, and you will eventually arrive at the trig point at Dun Fionn.

8. Ride in a southerly direction along the cliff top until you reach Clauchlands point. This is natural singletrack that is fast and difficult, and in spots, it is rather steep. There are significant drops down to the left, so please use caution. Continue over a rocky field and a style as you get closer to the bottom of the hill. Proceed to the left of the World War II Bunker and descend onto a track.

9. Continue down the path that runs along the coast until you reach a gate leading to a paved road. Continue down the coast road and after passing the hospital, turn right. Just after you cross a bridge, the next turn is to your right.

10. Climb this little road until you reach a T-junction with the A841, then turn right and continue rising the road until you are just beyond the Lamlash Golf Clubhouse.

11. Head over to the gravel singletrack that can be found at the end of the paved pathway that is direct across from the golf course. Carry on along this route as it winds above the road to the crest of the hill, where you will find the forest road leading to the Cnoc Na Dial Forest car park and picnic area, which is located next to the major road leading from Brodick to Lamlash.

12. Keep going onto more singletrack until you come out in a tiny parking area that also serves as a viewpoint. Turn left and stay on the singletrack, which will take you down and over a few wooden bridges as it weaves its way.

13. At the second bridge, go up the rocky trail, passing over the highest point of the hill, and round the closed gate before beginning the descent into Brodick. Be careful as you make your way down this steep slope; there is a blind track crossroad towards the bottom that is often used by cars.

14. Keep going along the tarmac until you reach the T-junction. Take a right into Alma Road, then take the first left after the Co-op, which will bring you to another T-junction. To reach the Brodick Ferry Terminal, continue straight onto the A841 and take the last right turn.

Dyemill Forest Cycle Route

Description: Hard and technical ride through Dyemill Forest taking in Glenashdale Falls and the Giants Graves. The route takes in hilly forestry roads, tracks and rough trails.

Difficulty: Hard (this is a tough trail ride for experienced mountain bikers only).

This bike ride starts from the Dyemill Forest Car Park where your car can be left for the duration of your ride.

Route Description

1. After exiting the Dyemill Forest Car Park, turn to the right on to a forest road and follow it for approximately six kilometres as it winds and turns, ascends, and dips, and ultimately brings you to a crossroads with signposts directing you to either Whiting Bay or Glenashdale Falls.

2. At the intersection, go left towards Whiting Bay and keep an eye out for a right turn down the singletrack after a few hundred metres.

3. Continue down the challenging singletrack as it descends abruptly and then ascends steeply back up the hill until you reach a wooden bridge at the top of Glenashdale Falls, spanning over the water. Continue to descend on the very steep track as it passes the “viewing platform” at the Falls. From here follow the river down to Whiting Bay.

Take it easy on this section being very cautious as you make your way down. There are areas with large, exposed drops on the left side.

The trail will eventually flatten and level off just before you get to Whiting Bay; at this point, you should search for a right turn just before the barrier that is placed across the track to begin the steep ascent ‘Giant’s Graves’. A sign post marks the way.

4. If you need supplies at Whiting Bay, continue through the barrier and down into the village turn left at the road intersection, and then retrace your route back to the singletrack up to Giant’s Graves. This is a traditional ascent in the slalom style, work your way up to the top, and you will be rewarded with some amazing Arran vistas. The Graves are a fantastic place to take a well deserved rest.

Continue beyond the Graves and you will eventually reach the main woodland road. There has in recent times been extensive forestry works in this area so, apologies if the woodland walk looks more like a pine tree graveyard!

5. Take the first right into the woodland road, which will lead you back to the intersection at no. 2

6. Continue down the main woodland road in the direction of Lamlash for about two kilometres. Once you have ridden past the golf course, keep an eye out for a vast gravel patch that is located at the foot of a steep hill to the right. Stop in the trough of the road just before entering the gravel section.

7. Enter the single track may be accessed from the forest road via a brief but steep gravel slope on the right. As you make your way through the forest, keep an eye out for painted yellow dots that have been marked on numerous rocks and trees which guide you as to which route to take.

After passing over a farm track in the middle of the forest, go in a direct line until you come out at a tiny water treatment facility that is located at the end of the track. Carry on along the trail for approximately one hundred meters, and then halt at the summit of a short, steep ascent.

8. Take the right turn and descend the extremely steep singletrack that leads into the woodland, continuing to follow the yellow dots.

WARNING: This section of the trail is difficult with drops, roots, and mud, and it culminates in a crossing over a small river. After passing a ruinous building, take the first left into a track, and continue down this route until you reach the forest road.

9. After traveling a few meters on the forest road to the right, turn left at a post to access a further track. Follow this as it winds its way down the slope of the burn, passing by a water pond on the way, and ultimately you will find yourself back in the Dyemill Forest Car Park where this enjoyable ride finishes.

Glen Cloy Cycle Route

Distance:  10km

Description: A moderate mountain bike route up to Cnoc Na Dial then back through the beautiful Glen Cloy. The route takes in forestry roads and tracks

Difficulty: Medium (suitable for most mountain bikers from novice provided they have a good level of fitness).

This bike ride starts from the Brodick Ferry terminal where there a many parking options either within the terminal or along the sea front in Brodick.

Route Description

1. Begin and end your journey at the Brodick Ferry Terminal. After turning right onto the A841, continue straight onto Alma Road until you reach the Co-op. Continue down this path over the top of Brodick, and when you reach the Glenartney Hotel (where the road turns into a track), take a left-up Manish.

2. Climb this rocky track and keep going straight up the hill until you reach a gate that leads into singletrack which is more technically challenging.

3. This descends, then climbs again, crossing a handful of wooden bridges along the route. The path terminates in a parking lot that doubles as a viewpoint.

4. Take the singletrack on the right to reach the car park and picnic area in the Cnoc Na Dial Forest, which is located next to the major road that connects Brodick and Lamlash.

5. Take the first right into the Forest Road, then go through the Forestry Commision gate and continue straight when you reach the fork bearing right. Continue along this track for almost three kilometers as it first ascends and then falls into Glencloy. After crossing the Cloyburn Bridge, the road meanders right and comes to a sharp left-hand curve; on this bend, follow the singletrack that branches off to the right.

6. Continue down this singletrack as it winds its way through the woods, passing over a slender wooden bridge and coming to an end at a gate.

7. After passing through the gate, proceed across the field until you reach the far corner on the other side, where there is another gate. Continue down the way down for around 400 meters, passing the right side of the buildings, until you reach a little trail intersection on the right.

8. Take this singletrack and follow the riverbank; the trail will soon convert into a track, and then it will turn into a tiny asphalt road as it passes the Auchrannie Resort Hotel and will finally reach the main road in Brodick.

9. Take a right and continue through Brodick and soon you will be back at the Ferry Terminal.

Brodick Castle Cycle Route

Brodick Castle Cycle Route

Distance: 10km       

Description: Mountain Bike Ride along hilly forest roads, rough trails and tracks around the iconic Brodick Castles Gardens.

Difficulty: Medium (Suitable for all Mountain Bikers with a good level of fitness)

Park & Start

If you are arriving by car and unloading your mountain bikes it is recommended that you pull up in the car park located opposite the Arran Heritage Museum where your car can be left for the duration of the ride. From here it is but a short cycle to the Rosa Bridge and start of the Brodick Castle Cycle Route.

Route Description 

1. The cycle begins and ends at the South Castle Gate, which is located on the A841. Continue the ride north along the coast road, passing Arran Aromatics, the Arran Brewery, and the entrance to Brodick Castle, and keep an eye out for seals sunning themselves on the rocks along this stretch. Keep going straight until you reach Merkland Wood, which is the next track on the left.


2. Climb this hard woodland road, cross a bridge, and go through a forest gate, follow the clear track as it meanders left right and left again then continue straight ahead at the next track junction to reach a bridge over Merkland Burn.


3. Stay on this woodland road as it winds its way upward until you reach a crossroads intersection at the top of the hill. 

4. Take the rocky trail to the left and continue descending rather steeply until you reach the next junction.

5. Take the right fork and keep going down the track, which may be bumpy in spots. Use caution as you make your way down the steep curves until you reach the Goat Fell trail at the next T-junction. Watch out for pedestrians as well as vehicles that use the Goatfell Trail as it forms part of the Goatfell Summit Walk and is well used. 


6. Take the first turn to the left and continue descending for a little distance before making a right turn at a tiny junction onto a more overgrown and grassy track. This track then turns left and continues descending to another small path intersection.


7. Make a right turn and then an immediate left turn onto a muddy route that contours around a steep-sided gully. After crossing a big wooden bridge over the river, be careful of the cliffs on the left side of the bridge. Continue to the top of the trail where it splits. 

8. Take the first right down onto a rough grassy track that leads into Glen Rosa. The route will eventually come to an end at a wall that separates the forest; do not walk through the wall. Follow the muddy road that leads down to the left of the wall, being sure to watch out for hidden rocks and other obstacles along the way, and you will eventually come across the more stable path.


9. Take a left onto this route that sometimes has muddy sections; it steadily rises along the Glen Rosa field border and eventually connects with a forest road at the top of the hill.


10. Take the first right and along a wooded road until you reach Castle drive.


11. Make a right turn onto Castle Drive and continue down this road until it ends at the A841 road. As you travel along this road, keep an eye out for the standing stones that are located in the fields beyond the beech hedges.
