The festival offers a variety of walks, ranging from easy strolls to more challenging hikes, so there’s something for everyone.

Sustainability at its Heart

The festival has committed to reduce its impact on the environment by minimising the use of single-use plastics. Participants are encouraged to carry reusable water bottles and the festival has eliminated the usage of single-use, non-degradable plastic plates, cups, and cutlery. 

All the money earned from the festival is used for organising the festival and associated expenses. The festival strives to keep the prices as low as possible to enable maximum participation. Although the walk leaders volunteer their services without any charge, the prices charged do not cover the complete expenses of providing insurance, transportation, and a booking administration system. Thus, the festival makes up the balance through generous sponsorship by several Arran businesses, social events, and the Friends scheme.

After a little reinvention in 1989, this festival became a shining beacon of musical delight, firmly establishing itself as a highlight on Arran’s tourism calendar.

Amy Laurenson

Hailing from the enchanting Shetland Isles and currently calling Glasgow home, Amy Laurenson is a remarkable pianist whose musical journey weaves together the traditional melodies of her Shetland roots with the rich tapestry of Scottish, Irish, and Scandinavian folk tunes. Raised in a household surrounded by classical influences, Amy’s unique style gracefully oscillates between traditional, classical, and jazz realms, challenging preconceived notions about the piano’s role in traditional music. 

Crowned BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year 2023 at Celtic Connections, Amy has graced stages across the UK, from the Shetland Folk Festival to the Edinburgh TradFest. 

Her debut album, “Strands,” set for release on February 2, 2024, beautifully reflects on her Shetland heritage, intertwining it with contemporary threads. Richie Muir, an Edinburgh singer/guitarist and lifelong Runrig enthusiast, seized the opportunity presented by the lockdown to launch a Facebook page dedicated to acoustic covers of Runrig classics. Teaming up with band manager Ben Marshall, the concept of a live show honouring Runrig’s legacy was conceived. This was not to be a conventional ‘look-a-like’ tribute but a heartfelt celebration of the band’s contributions to the music industry, Scotland, and the lives of their fans.

It’s that time of year again, where we celebrate the historic plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament by remembering Guy Fawkes and immersing ourselves in the mesmerizing glow of Bonfire Night. But before you pack your sparklers and head to this charming Scottish island, remember, Mother Nature can be quite the trickster. So, be sure to check the weather forecast before you embark on your fiery adventure!

NORTHEND FESTIVAL OF FIRE :

Kicking off the fiery festivities is the Northend Festival of Fire, held at Lochranza & Catacol Village Hall on the 3rd of November. Starting from 7 pm, you can relish a scrumptious BBQ at the hall, bask in the warmth of the bonfire on the village green, admire the floodlit Lochranza Castle, and be dazzled by fireworks on the Castle lawn, including a spectacular finale. To keep the rhythm going, Arran Brass band and Skirl Power will serenade your ears, and the band Dark White will have you dancing the night away in the village hall, complete with a licensed bar to keep the spirits high.

LAMLASH BONFIRE & FIREWORKS:

The Lamlash Bonfire Night, scheduled for the 4th of November, promises to be the island’s finest. Gather at Lamlash Green from 7 pm for an unforgettable experience. The bonfire itself is a sight to behold, so bring your wooden items (yes, only wooden items, please) to contribute to the blaze. If you can’t lug them over, feel free to contact the organizers for collection arrangements. The day kicks off at 11 am with a meet-up to build the fire, and the bonfire is lit at 7 pm, followed by an extravagant fireworks display at 7:30 pm.
